The Campaign

Thanks for visiting our website and reading about our campaign. Our vital children's health services in Dorchester are at risk due to a major overhaul of Dorset's healthcare services. Our maternity ward, Kingfisher children's ward and SCBU (Specialist Care Baby Unit) at Dorset County Hospital are at threat of major proposals to move these services over to East Dorset - the Bournemouth or Poole area.

This means that children in the West Dorset area including Dorchester will have to travel at least 45 minutes (at quiet times) to the new proposed site. For patients suffering seizures or requiring urgent medical attention this adds a huge amount of extra risk and stress for both the parents and children. The Kingfisher Ward provides around the clock care for children with short and long term illnesses. SCBU look after premature babies and those born with complications. The maternity ward cares for new and expectant mothers with their newborn children. As residents of West Dorset we deserve to keep these services where they are - and where they have been for many years.

We are a group of everyday people who either use these vital services ourselves, use the services frequently through our children who are bravely battling illness, or through our friends and family who are going through these circumstances. Our campaign started in early 2015 and we will continue to protest against The Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group's proposals until our voices are heard.

We have been fortunate to receive a huge amount of support from many people - including local residents, people across Dorset and many from across the UK who are fed up with NHS cuts and talk of austerity affecting our vital services. We cannot afford to lose these and we rely on the support of our expanding circle of friends who are joining us to fight these proposals. Please join us on our mission.

"Having a seriously ill child in the middle of the night is one of the most frightening experiences a parent can have. Knowing that the Kingfisher Ward is here and available locally - that's why so many people are out here marching today." - Billy Bragg
